Love Your List & Your List Will Love You

You may have heard the saying often thrown about in internet Marketing circles: The Money is In the list. I'm not going to argue with this, it is as true today as it has ever been.

In fact, I would go as far as to say the single most important thing to do for anyone new to the world of internet marketing is to start building an email list as soon as possible.

Indeed the great majority of any internet marketers time is taken up by growing their list. But unless you spend some time looking after the existing customers in your list then everything you've invested will have been wasted.

If I could give only one piece of advice to anyone starting out in Internet marketing it would be "Love Your List."

Unfortunately the majority of people venturing into internet marketing make one major error. They are so focused on squeezing as much profit out of their list as they possibly can that they forget they are dealing with real people.

This approach may work well in the short term and could even give you a good initial income. However, eventually you will lose the confidence and trust of the people on your list and they will stop responding.

This way you are going to have to put time and money into replacing the customers you are consistently losing.

Believe me you will have better things to do with your time than constantly replacing people dropping out of your list due to neglect.

These are real people!

You need to understand that behind every email address you collect there is a real person. Someone who has shown an interest in what you have to offer. They have trusted you enough to give you their name and email address. A conscious decision was made to take the time and respond to you. They may even have downloaded one of your products or possibly made a purchase from you.

So you must remember these are real people with real dreams and real feelings. You will find that if you treat them as such, if you show your human side, you will be in this business for the long term rather than be just a quick flash in the pan.

When you get a new subscriber don't go all out sell, sell, sell. Because if you are constantly plying people with sales emails, you will lose more people than you retain. If this has been your approach so far you need to stop now. This method has been a tactic of internet marketers for so long, it's just not working anymore. People these days will just not put up with that kind of hard sell.

Think about the times when you subscribed to someones list. It was probably because they had a free offer that interested you, right? Now when you gave them your email address you knew that would not be the last you heard from them. You know at some point down the line they are going to try and sell you one thing or another.

If they take the hard-sell approach and keep pestering you with sales emails chances are you will unsubscribe from their list. However if they are sending you useful information. Or they are giving you free training or great advice, you are more inclined to read their sales emails when they inevitably do arrive.

Remember it cost a lot more time, effort and money to get a new subscriber than it does to keep your existing list happy and interested.

People will stay on your list if you are giving them great FREE content. The longer they are on your list the more chance you get to build their trust. The more they trust you the more likely they are to become a paying customer. They are more likely to recommend you if they think that what you are providing is useful and worthwhile.

These people on your list can be your greatest form of promotion...

You can tell people how great you are. You can tell them what a wonderful product you are selling. They may or may not believe you, they may or may not buy from you. But if someone totally unconnected to you gives you the thumbs up... that is such a powerful thing.

There is nothing greater for yourself or your brand than the endorsement of one of your customers.

It is for this reason that I say Love Your List.

If you put the time and effort and love into your existing customers then it will pay off in the long term. Not only will you have to spend less time replacing the customers you are losing. You are more likely to have a growing list who are willing to become paying customers.


When you are starting out, building an email list can seem like the hardest thing in the world. To get complete strangers to trust you enough to join your list can really take a heck of a lot of time and effort. So doesn't it make sense to ensure that all that work you have put in to get your subscribers should not go to waste?

In Conclusion

Remember! it is extremely important to keep growing your list, but it is equally important to look after your existing subscribers. After all you don't want the effort you are putting in to growing your list to end up being largely to replace the people you are losing.

Once you start to build your list, ensure you spend some time connecting with those people. Send them an email AT LEAST once a week. Make them feel wanted, valued and loved. Send them free content, help, advice and tips. Give them free training but ensure it is the full course that delivers on what you promise.

Don't give away 80% of something and then ask people to pay for the final 20%. This is a sure fire way to get people reaching for the unsubscribe button.

In short if you love your list, your list will love you.

The Value of Email Marketing

One of the most, if not the most important aspect of email marketing, is capturing people's email addresses, so that you can subsequently contact them and market to them. You have probably heard it said that 'the money is in the email list' or even that email marketing is like a 'license to print money'.

And that is true because if you have a sizeable, quality email list, you essentially have a private clientele, genuinely interested in what you have to offer. How do you know that? Well, because they took the time and (let's face it), the chance to share a piece of personal contact info (their email) with a perfect stranger - that's you!

So why is email marketing so powerful and necessary? The answer is, if you do not have a means of capturing peoples email addresses, once they visit and eventually of course leave your website (or whatever other platform you use to market and sell your products and/or services), they will likely forget all about you and what you are offering.

This is expected; people are bombarded with marketing messages all day; so even if they somehow come across your message, offering etc. amid a sea of other marketing messages and even if they like what they see, they will most likely forget all about it once their attention is diverted to something else. You cannot expect them to bookmark your site or remember you; you simply cannot have this kind of 'diva' attitude as a small business owner.

So, think of email marketing this way: by collecting people's contact info, you are also doing them a favor, by giving them the chance to be contacted by you and exposed to something they have already clearly expressed interest in.

- Single Opt-In or Double Opt-In?

As you collect people's emails using an autoresponder service, you are in a position to choose if your subscribers should be 'single opt-in' or 'double opt-in'.

Single opt-in subscribers are required solely to provide an email address (fake or genuine!), but double opt-in ones are required to log in to an actual, real email account and verify their email.

There are obvious pro's and con's to single- and double opt-in's. With single opt-in, you will gain more subscribers but with double opt-in, you will amass more serious, devoted subscribers, who cared enough for a certain topic to go through the extra verification step.

I personally favor double opt-in's, strongly, though it pains me every time I see a potential subscriber who took the initial step of providing an email (I receive an email alert from my autoresponder service whenever that happens), but stopped there, without verifying it, for whatever reason (fear?) - and yes, you can monitor these events and get a lot of additional data about the people who subscribe to your email list.

And that is very important, because the more you know about your buyers, the more targeted (and thus effective) your marketing efforts will be.

7 Things Your Readers Want to Read in Your Next Blog Post

As you probably already know, there are some things your readers will want to read about more than others.
I've been using 7 simple guidelines to make sure I don't bore my readers, and I'd like to share them with you. Hopefully, they're going to help you when you write your next blog post, so sit back, relax and enjoy!

1. They Want to Read What's Interesting to You
If you do everything right, your followers will love you. They will want to be a part of your life. They'll want to know what interests you, what bores you, what makes you sad or happy.
If you do everything right, your readers will be your friends, and they'll be genuinely interested in what makes you tick.
Some people say you should keep your blog on topic, and you can't lose focus from the fact that the main thing your readers want is what you can teach them about what they're interested in.
That's true, but they do want a little bit of what's going on inside your head, even if it's not related to the niche.
(Please note that I said a little bit, not a whole lot.)

2. They Want to Read About Your Personal Life
This goes along with what we just talked about, but in a different way. We just discussed who you are as a person, and now we're going to talk about how you live.
A really good example of talking about your personal life and tying it to your niche is a story that Frank Kern talked about. He used to run a successful dog training business online, for which he used a pseudonym.
One day he realized he's going to hit a million dollars in sales that year, so he decided to film the actual event of making that money. As it so happens, he was actually on vacation with his family when this was happening, so he talked about that as well.
He told a story about how he was going to fly the whole family some place, but then he realized it would actually be better to just charter a plane, so they did.
This was fun, the people hearing the story were entertained, but he also strengthened his position as an expert in the field, killing two birds with one stone.

3. They Want to Read News
Anything new happening in the market? Any trends you've spotted that will lead to changes for your readers?
Whenever you're looking at what's going on in the niche, and noticing there's something new happening, go ahead and post about it.
Your follower will eat it up. The earlier they get the news, the better, so timing is very important here. It goes without saying, that if you're late and the market is already talking about it, then it's better for you to say nothing and move on.

4. They Want to Read About Strategies that Worked for You
This is my all time favorite. Nothing can beat a strategy, a system, a trade secret or a killer tip that you know is going to help your readers. Before you share a trade secret, however, you need to make sure that it works, which means you need to test it yourself.
On top of that, before you sit down and write about your test results, you need to plan your content carefully, so that you're able to present the whole strategy in such a way, that everyone can take it, implement what you tell them and succeed with it.
You don't want to leave important details out, as that would cause your readers to fail. Obviously, when they fail, they think what you're saying doesn't work and you lose authority. You don't want that.

5. They Want to Read About How You Work
One of the main reasons people follow you is you get the results they want. No matter what market you're in, people want to get what you have.
Now, this doesn't usually require going behind the scenes, so to speak, and looking at how you work, but a post like that every now and again will make your blog much more interesting.
For example, you're in the fitness and bodybuilding niche, and you focus on mostly on getting a toned body once someone has already gotten rid of the excess weight.
Obviously, you share them pretty much everything they need to know, and they're happy implementing your advice.
Now, although they don't really need it to succeed, go ahead and take them to your gym. When you're there, have someone record you as you work out. This might seem strange to you, especially at first, but it's awesome to see your idol work.

6. They Want to Read Funny Stuff
This is pretty self explanatory. If you have something that's both funny and related to your niche, go ahead and share it.
The key is, to be relaxed about it. If you just crack a joke casually, for example, you'll do great. If, on the other hand, you try too hard, what you say won't be funny, and it'll seem weird. Just have fun and your readers will have fun with you.

7. They Want to See Pictures and videos
There's nothing more boring than a block of plain, mundane text.
You don't have to just plain write if you don't want to. You can use pictures, screen capture videos, talking head videos, pictographics, diagrams, audios, comics, or anything else that will help you to break things up.
Just use your imagination, come up with something fun, and enjoy it.

Facebook Live Is Here - Are You Using It?

Since it was launched in the Spring of 2016, Facebook Live is continuing to gain popularity as an easy (and fun!) way to communicate who you are (and your brand) to your community. Originally launched for mobile use only, online marketers can now stream live from their desktops as well.

  6. For your planned Live broadcasts, promote them across your social media channels, let your community know when they can join you. Have a team member sending reminders as your broadcast is about to begin, and then providing some "tech support" while you're chatting, responding on your behalf to questions.
  7. Think about timing - who is your target market, and when are they most likely to be online? Busy professionals are not likely to tune in during the workday, busy parents don't have time after school during the dinner rush. Leverage what you know about your market, and time your broadcast appropriately. Not sure? Play around with it. Choose a variety of different times/days of the week and watch your engagement.
  8. And with timing of course we need to talk about the length of your Live broadcast - keep it reasonable. Go too long, it'll get wordy and awkward, too short and your followers will be disappointed. Think your broadcast through, what do you really want to touch on, what can wait, and know when enough is enough.
  9. Watch other's Livestreams - what are your colleagues doing, what can you learn? Don't just look at what they're doing, but understand why. Is there Livestream mostly Q&A, or is it prepared content.
